Toy Safety Guide for Toddlers!

Toy Safety Guide for Toddlers!

Toys are an inevitable part of children’s lives, especially toddlers and preschoolers who love playing with their favorite toys and also indulge in pretend play with them, helping with their imaginative and creative skills. But, being a parent, have you ever considered their safety?

Well, toddlers and preschoolers, as much as they understand basic things, are not fully aware of the dangers that some toys bring with them. From choking hazards to sharp edges that can cut their skin, there are many toys that are a big no-no for children. So, let us discover some safety tips to make sure your child remains safe and sound during their playtime!

1. Choose Larger/Big Toys

The first and foremost way to get your child secure while playing with toys is by buying them larger toys. These help in making sure that the kids don’t intentionally or unintentionally (blame the curiosity of little ones) swallow or get them stuck in their throats.

2. Buy Age Appropriate Toys

Another thing to consider while keeping the safety of your kids in mind is that you get them toys that are appropriate to their age. If your child is 2 years of age, make sure to bring them suitable toys that they can enjoy as well as learn from. Giving infants larger toys can put them at risk of injury, while offering smaller toys or toys with choking hazards can be dangerous for 1-year olds. So, make sure to get safe and appropriate playing toys for your little ones.

3. Magnetic Toys

While it’s fun to play with magnetic toys, they can also pose a danger to kids, especially if they have small magnets incorporated. These small magnets or parts, if ingested, can be quite lethal. Not only that, but their small size also increases the risk of choking in kids. So, make sure your kids are old enough to play with such toys or use them under your supervision.

4. Avoid Small Round Toys and Objects

When kids are younger, they tend to get curious about everything. From the TV remote to your wallet filled with coins, they play with objects more than their toys. Hence, small and round objects like coins, balls, and similar items must be kept away from children. As these can easily get stuck in their windpipe if ingested, parents should stay clear of such things while their kids play.

5. Button Batteries - A Big No!

Kids get mesmerised by toys that run on batteries. Whether it’s the lights or music, they get more attentive to toys that can be controlled via batteries or charging. But did you know that even such toys can be extremely dangerous if not used properly? Toys with button batteries (which are easy to get misplaced and lead to choking hazards) are a big risk factor. Moreover, if your little one has a toy that runs on a battery, make sure to charge it somewhere away from them and then allow them to use it under your supervision.

6. Riding Toys

Riding toys may look fun and playful, but most parents overlook the dangerous aspect that comes with them. While they are good to be used by kids, if used roughly and without care, kids tend to fall off them easily and hurt themselves. That is why it’s important for parents to always supervise young children when they use riding toys, especially those who are still unsteady or tend to wobble.

7. Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals are one of the safest toys that you can give to a child. But here’s the catch: if you opt for stuffed toys from a local or unauthorized place, it can be quite toxic for your kid. From the outer material to the cotton or sponge filling, poor quality can make a toy unsuitable for your little one.

8. Be Aware of Balloons!

Balloons are definitely fun, especially for little ones who love watching them sway around in the air. But if they rip open, the latex material of the balloon can be quite dangerous for your kid. So, make sure they play with balloons under your supervision and clear all the broken parts, if it bursts, so it is not ingested by the kids.

While these are some of the major points to keep in mind, as a parent, you can never be too careful. So, make sure to keep an eye on your kids when they play, especially when they are quite young. Prioritize toys that are suitable for their age, are non-toxic, and are environmentally friendly, and create a safe space for your little one to play in.
